Description
BLANCHARD, Chief Engineer of Public Works. Signed autograph letter, Saint-Étienne (Loire), 22 September 1814. Addressed to ‘Monsieur, brother of the King (Count of Artois, the future Charles X)’. Petition for the award of the Legion of Honour: ‘… in 1810, appointed Chief Engineer and Director of Public Works, with the rank of colonel, in the Illyrian provinces, I organised the service there under the command of Marshal Duke of Ragusa…’. He then describes the works carried out under his command and continues: ‘… General Count Bertrand had promised me that once the road from Italy to Albania had been laid out as far as Ragusa, he would request the Cross of the Legion of Honour on my behalf: but before that could happen, he left Illyria to join the Grande Armée… Now that peace and happiness have returned under the rule of the lilies, and His Majesty Louis the Beloved is rewarding those who have devoted themselves to the service of their country, I come … to implore Your Royal Highness to grant me the sweetest reward that could flatter a French heart, that of dedicating my life to the service of His Majesty Louis the Beloved, as a Knight of the Legion of Honour’. He then lists the individuals supporting his request: ‘Marshal de Raguse … the Count of Chabrol … the Baron de Belle-Ville … General Count Fresia …’. Four pages; dimensions: 23.2 x 32.5 cm. Note: the registration margins have been trimmed Polish Army, General Ramorino’s 2nd Corps / 5th Infantry Division, 2nd Brigade. Handwritten service record of Captain Jean Kowalski, a Polish officer in the Vistula Legion. Campaigns in Russia in 1812, Germany in 1813 and France in 1814. Fine example. Dimensions: 43.5 x 34 cm.
