Description
A collection of letters describing ‘life’ in an editorial office (‘La petite République’): opinion pieces, letters of complaint or reproach, various clarifications regarding individuals or articles, etc. It includes: [Alexandre Millerand] * Two short, signed autograph letters (one on ‘Chambre des Députés’ letterhead dated 2 February 1897, addressed ‘to Mr Lejeune’; the other on ‘La petite République’ letterhead, addressed to Mr Teillard). The first concerns a difference of opinion regarding the ‘salary’ of the editorial secretary and his superior (Millerand was editor-in-chief of *La petite République*); The second is a firm clarification regarding Mr Villedary, who ‘took the liberty of sending a note to the editorial secretary. ‘As I have no intention of having any dealings with this individual, I would be grateful if you would kindly use a different intermediary in future (…)’. Enclosed is a note of thanks on a calling card reading ‘Alexandre Millerand, barrister at the Court of Appeal, Member of Parliament’. Also enclosed is an invitation card illustrated by Léandre, dated Sunday 22 July 1900, for a ‘reception held in honour of the contributors to the Universal Exhibition and the workers’ associations (…)’. Numerous annotations in pencil. *Alexandre Millerand (1859–1943); French journalist, editor-in-chief and statesman (President of the Republic from 23 September 1920 to 11 June 1924). Autograph letter; 1p (expressing support and friendship) addressed to Gérault-Richard* and signed by the editorial committee (including Lejeune, Zevaco, etc.) ‘We take this opportunity to express our heartfelt sympathy and our pride in continuing our collaboration with *La Petite République socialiste* under your friendly leadership.’ * Gérault-Richard (1860–1911); journalist and socialist politician. Enclosed are a large number of signed handwritten letters, the vast majority of which are addressed to Lejeune (editorial secretary of *La Petite République*). Among others, there are letters from Grégoire Serwy (national secretary of the Belgian Workers’ Party) and Jean Longuet (1876–1938), a journalist and politician and grandson of Karl Marx; a scathing letter: ‘(…) it is obvious that when the entire newspaper is filled with insipid agency dispatches (…) there is no longer any room for more useful and interesting articles in a socialist newspaper. ’, by Gaston Cagniard (1875–1948), journalist; Hyppolite Destrem (1816–1894), journalist and Fourierist; Campbell Clarke (1845–1902), English journalist and writer, François-Alain Targé (1832–1902); lawyer, journalist and politician (Minister of the Interior and Minister of Finance under Gambetta), Baron Regnard de Lagny (1829–1890); Lieutenant-Colonel (a scathing letter addressed to a Member of Parliament dated 30 October 1880 denouncing an article published in *Le Parisien* concerning his dismissal), Anatole de Monzie (1876–1947); French politician; former minister during the interwar period (signed, handwritten calling card dated 3 November 1902; in which he requests an old article), Jules Lermina (1839–1915); French journalist and novelist (letter on letterhead addressed to ‘my dear Lejeune’ dated 4 October 1903; application for a position as a journalist at ‘La petite République’), Manuel Ugarte (1875–1951); Argentine writer and member of the Argentine Socialist Party (letter of thanks accompanied by a visiting card), Fernand Xau (1852–1899); French journalist, founder of the daily newspaper ‘Le Journal’, who was also Buffalo Bill’s impresario in France (one handwritten letter, a second typewritten; both signed); freckles, Eugène Thébault (1864–1942); French journalist and novelist, Paul Robin (1837–1912); French educator and libertarian, close to Bakunin. Enclosed are a few autograph letters (authors unidentified or unknown). The collection is in good condition. Appraisal carried out by Mr Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
