Description
GERÔME Jean-Léon (1824–1904), painter and sculptor Autograph signed letter (no place or date) addressed to his friend, the painter Gustave Boulanger (1824–1888): ‘I’m not quite sure what advice to give you on whether you should come to Fontainebleau. If it were a season when one could work from life, I would say: come at once; for by strolling about when one feels like doing nothing, and by working when one grows bored of idleness, one is sure to pass the time pleasantly. But now that the forest is bare and the weather is harsh, I think you’re bound to become even more despondent, given the gloomy thoughts you already harbour, if you remain alone in a room. I say ‘alone’ because I won’t always be able to be with you… In any case, decide for yourself what you should do. It’s certain that for the moment I’d like to see you far from Paris, and I have my reasons for that. In any case, if M. writes to you, don’t reply and play dead. If she comes, don’t see her. If you do see her, all is lost; the edge of the precipice is slippery, and you must keep your distance: unlike floating sticks, a woman is one thing up close and nothing at all from afar. I shake your hand, your friend J.L. Gérôme. Write to me. A thousand warm regards to you all. May the truffles be light (and not too aphrodisiacal…)’. 2 pages, in-8 (dim: 11.2 x 19 cm); fine copy. Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
