Description
[Clovis Hugues] *
Two short, two-page autograph letters, signed; five autograph notes, signed, three of which are on mourning paper; all the documents bear the letterhead of the Chamber of Deputies, are undated, and the recipients are unknown. One of them sums up the tone of the collection: ‘Martigny, Wednesday. “My dear colleague. Please excuse my slight delay. I thought I might be able to go to Paris and deliver my column to you in person, to shake your hand as we are friends. Crac! I was forced to stay by the water’s edge beneath the trees and can only send you a warm greeting.” The set is in excellent condition.
Included:
The original signed manuscript entitled ‘To J-B Clément**’ (5 handwritten pages); a tribute in the form of a poem read at Jean-Baptiste Clément’s funeral on 27 February 1903 at Père Lachaise. Page 3 cleanly cut (in the middle) with no loss of text; a fine copy.
*Clovis Hugues (1851–1907): politician (a Communard from Marseille), journalist, writer and politician.
** Jean-Baptiste Clément (1926–1903): Montmartre singer-songwriter, journalist, trade unionist and Communard, author of *Du temps des cerises*.
