Description
[BRITTANY] BOURBON (de) Louis-Jean-Marie (1725–1793), Duke of Penthièvre, Admiral and Grand Venueur of France (1734), Governor and Lieutenant of Brittany (1736). Signed letter (1p) at Compiègne, 20 August 1770. Addressed to the Duke of Choiseul (1719–1785), then Secretary of State for War: ‘Whilst thanking you most sincerely, Your Grace, for the kindness you have shown in bringing to my attention the letter written to you by Monsieur de Culant; I am far from wishing to stand in the way of anything that may be of vital importance to this prisoner’s well-being; but I would be very sorry for his family and for himself if he were to escape a second time; to reconcile these considerations, I shall enquire as to his current whereabouts, and shall then inform you of my views on the matter. It is impossible to add anything to the genuine and sincere friendship I have always felt for His Grace the Duke: I trust he does me the justice of being convinced of this. L.J.M. de Bourbon’.. Dimensions: 16.7 x 21.1 cm. Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
