BERNADOTTE Jean (1763–1844), Marshal of the First Empire; in 1813 he became Crown Prince of Sweden under the name Charles Jean (Karl Jan) and ruled the kingdom (Charles XIII of Sweden being elderly and without an heir); that same year he turned his back on Napoleon and joined the coalition against him.
Anonymous handwritten proclamation addressed ‘from the Headquarters at Oramenburg, 15 August 1813’
‘Proclamation by His Highness Charles Jean Bernadotte, Crown Prince of Sweden, Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the North in Germany. Soldiers, (…)” After a lengthy introduction denouncing the disastrous political situation in Europe following the Napoleonic Wars, the author becomes impassioned: “(…) Soldiers, it is therefore to arms that we must turn to secure peace and independence; the same sentiments that guided the French in 1792 (…) must now direct your valour against him who, having invaded the land of your birth, now enslaves your brothers, your wives and your children (…) world peace will be the result of your efforts (…)”.
4 pages, in-4 format (dimensions: 19.5 x 15.5 cm); a small tear at the fold, a few stains, otherwise a good copy.
