Description
[Executioner] Hugues NARDON (1768–1812); statesman, prefect, administrator of the Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastella, Baron of the Empire in 1809, appointed Grandee of Spain in 1810. Signed letter dated 23 Ventôse, Year 11, in Angers (1p). Document bearing a letterhead featuring an engraved vignette surrounded by the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equality’; the Prefect of the department of Maine-et-Loire addressed to the ‘Government Commissioner at the Criminal Court’. ’ Nardon conveys the decision of the Grand Judge, Minister of Justice [Claude Ambroise Régnier (1746–1814); Duke of Massa], to refuse an increase in the salary of the executioner of criminal judgements in Maine-et-Loire. ‘Citizen Commissioner’ “the Grand Judge and Minister of Justice, to whom the executioner of criminal judgements for the department had requested an increase in salary (…) that he cannot alter the provisions laid down in this regard by law and that there are no grounds to grant his request (…)”.
