Description
[Tutor to Louis XVI]
Jean-Gilles De COËTLOSQUET (1700–1784) *.
Signed autograph letter (1 page) dated 21 April 1772 at Versailles; addressee unknown. Dimensions: 18.7 x 23 cm.
Letter of intercession: ‘Allow me, Sir, to add my prayers to those of the Bishop of Limoges for the favour he is asking of you (…)’. Signed ‘+ the former Bishop of Limoges’. A fine specimen. A rare autograph; the Académie Française’s bibliography lists only a dozen such examples.
An old note in pencil reads: ‘These letters are curious; it seems that the Bishop had only one standard formula for all his correspondence’.
* Bishop of Limoges (from 1738 to 1758), tutor to Louis XVI; was elected to the Académie Française in 1761.
