Description
BLOCH Jean-Richard (1884–1947), writer, essayist, poet, anti-fascist activist.
A signed autograph page. Answers to a questionnaire (no place or date given), on the risks of chemical warfare (against the backdrop of rising Nazism), its consequences, and the solutions and measures to be recommended to deal with it.
‘Question No. 5: what measures do you recommend…? A strike against war. A strike against death. And perhaps through death itself. The peaceful yet stubborn refusal to collaborate in any way with this suicide of a race, a continent, a civilisation. When the gendarmerie, the Military Police and the court-martial encounter, in every town and village, five, ten, a hundred gentle yet obstinate resisters, will they shoot them all? And once they have shot Victor Méric, Georges Pioch, Pierre Scize, Charles Vildrac*, and so on, will they be able to carry on with impunity? Will not these great names, these great martyrs, raise an army of heroes and zealots? And the women who will lie down (this time!) on the tracks to prevent the troop trains from leaving – will they all be run over? Will they be lynched everywhere? Will their example not soon prove contagious? But it is obvious that a vast campaign of this kind cannot be improvised, nor left to chance… Jean-Richard Bloch’. Dimensions: 22.5 x 36 cm; fine copy.
*Victor Méric (1876–1933), journalist, libertarian writer and anti-militarist. Georges Pioch (1873–1953), president of the International League of Peace Fighters (1931).
