[Emigrants] Nicolas Marie de LÉAUMONT (1758–1842), officer. American War of Independence (1775–1783), Commissioner of War in Saint-Domingue (1803), Knight of the Order of Saint Louis and of the American Order of Cincinnati. Autograph letter signed (attributed to Léaumont) comprising 1.5 pages in folio. Paris, 4 June 1824. A document of rather strident tone, for the newspaper ‘L’Oriflamme’. It states that the billion in compensation granted to the émigrés has in no way benefited those who, modestly, fought for their King. Instead, it has enriched the political schemers, the Jewish and Christian bankers, the speculators – in short, ‘the entire devouring entourage of the ministry (…) whilst the true, modest émigré who fought for his King (…) will be deprived of the fruits of the act of justice that was meant to redress his misfortunes and reward his loyalty’; ‘Format: 19.5 x 31 cm.
