[LA POMPADOUR] Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de POMPADOUR (1721–1764), favourite of Louis XV. A lovely autograph letter signed ‘the Marquise de Pompadour’, dated 7 May 1750 at Versailles (one sheet written on both sides on heavy paper), addressed to ‘Monsieur de Puysieux*, Minister of State’ ‘I am deeply touched by the memory of Prince Edward, but I fear that the matter he spoke to me of may prove rather difficult; I shall, however, do my utmost to ensure its success (…)’ Further on, she expresses her satisfaction at Latude’s** imprisonment ‘(…) “I am pleased to see that I can count on your loyalty and diligence; you have informed me that Latude will never see the light of day again, and I am glad of this, for the ungrateful must be punished (…)”. Traces of creases, but in excellent condition. Rare. *Louis Philogène Brûlart, Count of Sillery, known as the ‘Marquis de Puysieulx’ (1702–1770); French military officer and diplomat (ambassador) **Jean Henry, known as Masers de Latude (1725–1805), famous for his numerous escapes. In 1749, in an attempt to raise his profile and win the favour of the royal mistress, he concocted a plot against Madame de Pompadour. He warned her at the last moment, but, having been exposed, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Bastille under a lettre de cachet, then held in the Vincennes dungeon.
