Description
[SALT MARSHES]
Île d’Oléron] –
A rare collection of 60 handwritten documents in-4 (1803–1832) (Empire – Restoration) relating to the salt marshes and the salt trade; all relating to Madame de Boumois (Elisabeth de Pont de Boumois). Amongst other items, there are several accounting documents concerning the management and trade of salt, including the ‘Details of the salt marshes and their yield for 1825 ’ (a table listing the names of the salt workers, the names of the salt marshes and the harvests (with comments)), various documents such as the ‘Account of salt sales for 1826 and a small portion of those for 1827 (…) ” (a handwritten table), estimates of the value of salt marshes (with locations indicated), “notes on the yield of salt from the Douhet marshes belonging to Madame de Bounois, sold to Mr Joseph Maurisset (…) ’ [as well as] ‘a record of the quantity of salt produced on Madame de Boumois’s salt marsh for the year 1804 ’ numerous handwritten letters; all addressed to Madame de Boumois (in various handwritings) including letters from the Abbé St Médard, Vicar General (manager and accountant for Madame de Boumois’s salt marshes and her interests, and intermediary with the merchants) describing the salt trade, price fluctuations, transport costs and various other items of news, including the announcement of the Duchess of Berry’s visit on 11 and 12 July [1828] to La Rochelle.
An exceptional insight into the salt trade in the early 19th century; a lot requiring further research by a scholar. One letter is stained, though this does not affect legibility; there is some wear and creasing due to age, but otherwise in excellent condition.
