Description
[1877 ELECTIONS]
Silk scarf: Union of all republican groups. Following the dissolution of the Chamber of Deputies in June 1877, the 363 deputies who had signed a declaration on 18 May in support of republican institutions – a veritable manifesto against President Mac Mahon – declared their unity and their intention to stand as candidates in the October elections, when the Chamber was to be renewed. This silk scarf depicts the alliance between Adolphe Thiers, honorary president of the Republican campaign, and Léon Gambetta, the principal Republican leader. The portraits of the two men appear in medallions on either side of the coat of arms of the City of Paris. Dimensions: 42 x 37 cm. A fine example.
Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD.
