Dimensions: 11 x 15.5 cm. Edouard DROUUN de LHUYS (1805–1881), diplomat, politician, Minister for Foreign Affairs during the Second Empire. Autograph letter signed on Ministry of Foreign Affairs letterhead, dated 10 August 1863 in Paris, addressed to the Minister of Finance. ‘Sir and dear colleague, during one of the recent sessions of Parliament, Lord Palmerston, when questioned by Mr Cobden regarding the naval armaments being built in Liverpool, spoke of an armoured vessel which was allegedly commissioned by the Emperor’s Government. I know from the Count de Chasseloup-Laubat that no order of this nature has been placed in England on behalf of the Imperial Navy. For his part, our Consul in Liverpool has informed me that the vessel in question was built at Mr Laird’s shipyards in Birkenhead, and that a Frenchman, Mr Bravay, claiming to be a partner in the firm A. Bravay & Co. of Paris, has announced that he would shortly be in a position to prove the ship’s French ownership. It would therefore seem reasonable to assume that this merchant has submitted an application for registration as a French vessel to the customs authorities. I would much appreciate being informed on this matter without delay, and I should be most grateful to Your Excellency if you would be so kind as to provide me, as soon as possible, with any information your department is able to supply regarding this matter…’. Three pages (2ff.). Dimensions: 20.5 x 31 cm. Handwritten note: Urgent and confidential. Fine copy Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
