Description
CAROLUS-DURAN Charles (1837–1917), painter. Director of the French Academy in Rome. Signed autograph letter (with his cipher) without place or date, addressed to a ‘Dear Madam’: ‘I have just returned from the countryside, hoping to spend the evening with you and your dear family, yet here I am, completely unable to go: I have been suffering from a dreadful migraine since last night. Is it the storm? I have no idea. I was hoping it would pass, but it has only got worse. I need not tell you how sorry I am; you will understand, and, remembering the state this dreadful ailment puts me in, you will sympathise with me and excuse me to your husband, as well as to Mr and Mrs A. Feydeau. Please believe, dear Madam, how sad I am not to be able to join you, and have pity on your ever-devoted painter and friend. Carolus-Duran’. Two pages; dimensions: 12.5 x 20.3 cm; fine copy. Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
