Description
[NAVY]
[Manuscript]
GAREAU (H.): School of Accountancy. Brest. Crews of the Fleet, Navy and Colonies.
Manuscript dated 1879, folio size, ix-232-5 pp (including tables), with a grisaille watercolour (vignette) of the ‘Galathée ’ (sailing ship) at the entrance to Brest harbour, and enriched with numerous fold-out tables; fine calligraphy, initials in Indian ink and pen, etc… Contemporary binding in brown half-basane, with a modestly plain spine.
Manuscript dealing with all aspects of the profession of naval quartermaster in Brest: procurement, pricing and distribution of clothing, as well as desertion, prison, training, pay, rations, marriage licences, etc… Includes numerous printed sheets and completed, signed documents; mostly leaflets, including a plate depicting ‘hand telegraphy’ in 28 vignettes. Of note at the end, following the table of contents, is a page (also handwritten) on the value of ‘foreign currencies’. The binding is slightly worn, but this is nonetheless an exceptional document; a genuine insight into the navy at the end of the 19th century.
Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD.
