Description
Georges DEGRAND, Baron de Beauvoir (1751–1816); lawyer, magistrate, mayor of Carcassonne… later Baron of the Empire (12 April 1813). A surprising letter [for a Baron of the Empire] – a single page signed and dated 26 April 1814, sent from Castelnaudary ‘To the mayors of the district ’ (letter on printed letterhead reading ‘Baron de Grand-de-Beauvoir’, accompanied by a handwritten ‘Vv le roi’): ‘Gentlemen, a great and happy revolution has just taken place. The illegitimate power that oppressed France has been destroyed. Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne through the magnanimity of Emperor Alexander [of Russia] and his august allies, and by the unanimous will of all the French people. He ascends it with an olive branch in his hand; the calamities of war are vanishing, our wounds are healing (…). The descendant of St Louis and Henry IV, by taking up the sceptre of his forefathers, brings us peace (…) I am sure our crown shares the sentiments of the whole kingdom; but it is fitting, to reassure those whose spirits are still apprehensive, that these sentiments be expressed aloud.’ This is followed by a request for the municipal council’s endorsement, with the minutes drawn up.’ Date partly erased (but legible); otherwise a fine example. Dimensions: 19 x 29.5 cm. Appraisal carried out by Pascal GUILLEBAUD. Lot from a voluntary sale.
