Commendatory abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Gildas-des-Bois (1679). Cardinal of Orléans (1697). Grand Chaplain of France. Signed autograph letter, Lyvonne, 15 March (year not specified), addressed to ‘Your Eminence’. Expressing thanks for letters sent since his departure from Versailles. He is in Rome: ‘I am assured that it is established custom for French cardinals to stay with the French Ambassador… the Princess des Ursins was kind enough to offer me accommodation, but I have too many people with me and I fear I might inconvenience her. I am having some tapestry hangings brought over because some of my friends have led me to hope that I might find a palace to rent …”. 4 pages in-4; dim: 17 x 22.5 cm. Joseph GRANDET (1646–1724), Doctor of the Sorbonne, priest of Saint-Sulpice, Superior of the seminary at Angers, parish priest of Sainte-Croix in Angers, historian [and] Hilaire-Guy de LAVAL-MONTMORENCY (c. 1660–1716), known as the Abbé de Laval, later Marquis de La Plesse and de Saint-Clément. Letter signed by both. Saint-Cément de La Plesse, 11 May 1696. Settlement of a dispute between them concerning a ditch separating their respective vineyards and land in the parish of Saint-Cément de La Plesse. 2pp in-4; dim: 16.6 x 22.7 cm. Charles II MONTAULT DES ISLES (1755–1839), Constitutional Bishop of Vienne (1791–1795), Bishop of Angers (1802–1839). Signed autograph letter, Angers, 17 Prairial, Year 11, in the year of Our Lord 1803 (sic). Addressed to the Citizen President of the Criminal and Special Court: an invitation, together with that of the court, to a solemn procession of the Most Holy Sacrament, to be held on Sunday, the Feast of Corpus Christi, 23 Prairial… ‘What a source of satisfaction for me, what a joy for all the faithful of the city, to see the constituted authorities joining with us in promoting and enhancing the splendour of the Catholic faith, which the government protects!’..”.
