In the summer of 1913, Marie Vassilieff took her students to work in Spain: Fontarabia, Pasajes, San Sebastian. She brought back notebooks and paintings. This Spanish landscape from 1915 is the most accomplished result. A bird's-eye view of a village: the roofs overlap in flat expanses of pure colour, the volumes fit together without any classical perspective, the geometry imposes itself. The treatment recalls the lessons of Cézanne digested by Cubism, but the palette, warm and frank, betrays the Basque light and the eye of a colourist trained by Matisse. The work was exhibited in Berlin in 1995, in Paris in 1998 and at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen-Basel in 2015 as part of the exhibition devoted to the Last Futurist Exhibition 0.10. Georges Hilaire, reporting on the exhibition Les Cubistes in 1973, explicitly regretted Vassilieff's absence, praising his "compositions quivering with painful sensitivity". This painting is one of the most convincing examples of this.
