Juliette Germain was the wife of Dr Pierre-Raoul Germain, a patron of the arts and a friend of Marie Vassilieff. She posed nude, standing in absolute frontality. Her tomboyish appearance, athletic build, steely profile and hairless sex give her a statuesque presence that Vassilieff treats with a radical economy of means. Lauren Jimerson notes that Juliette's body, reduced to a series of shifting geometric shapes, deliberately blurs the boundaries between male and female anatomy. The painting forms a diptych with the Modern Salome of 1931: where Eric throws a woman's head into the flames, Juliette embodies the upside-down female figure, neither mother nor conventional wife, but an Eve without original sin. It's not a commissioned portrait: it's a statement. This highly exhibited work is one of the best documented in the Bernès collection.
