Description
Marie Vassilieff (Franco-Russian, 1884-1957) "La flamme du Saint-Esprit, n°1", 1927-1928 Costume model for a ballet project at the Bal de la Misère Noire Pencil and gouache on paper. Signed and annotated. Height 31.6 Width 24 cm. Provenance: Claude Bernès collection (1941-2025). This work is registered in the Claude Bernès-Marie Vassilieff archives under no. 212. Bibliography: Claude Bernès and Benoît Noël, "Marie Vassilieff", published by BVR, Livarot, work reproduced on p. 207. The ballet "Avant-Pendant-Après", composed by Claude Dubosc and for which Marie Vassilieff had designed the costumes and sets, even dancing the role of Colombe, was to be performed during the Bal de la Misère noire. Unfortunately, a campaign by the Communist press led to its cancellation on the eve of the performance scheduled for 17 February 1927 at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, which was to welcome Jean Börlin, the star dancer of the Swedish Ballets. The ballet was finally performed with the costume models at the Duboscqs' Théâtre du Bourdon d'Onesse on 5 February 1928.
