Georges Collard practises playing his plunger in an attempt to charm a puppy or an ostrich. The eloquent stylisation hits the nail on the head. Marie Vassilieff dreams of prolonging her son's childhood by citing the dolls and drawings that captivated him as a child. At the age of thirteen, during his first years at boarding school at the Ecole de Commerce et de l'Industrie in Montargis, his work had even deteriorated, and he was already missing the presence of his mother. This painting belongs to the series of children's portraits from 1929-1930, in which Vassilieff captures with tender acuity the age between childhood and emancipation. The stylisation, inspired by both Cubism and popular Russian imagery, gives these little figures an almost puppet-like presence.
