A painted silk fan depicting the painting ‘La Sirène’, painted in 1881 and exhibited at the Brussels Salon. 14-rib frame, with engraved and gilded wooden front and back panels.
For this work, which has since been lost, the painter was accused of having painted from a photograph; however, he won his lawsuit against his detractors and capitalised on the scandal to cement his reputation as a painter of high society.
Mounted in a frame.
