Description
Three-gilded miniature box, probably from Hanau, late 18th century. Rectangular in shape with rounded corners and a cage-style mount; the lid is decorated with an ivory miniature depicting an interior scene with women and children gathered round a hearth, signed ‘Mte Gérard’, the four sides and the underside decorated with six ivory miniatures depicting genre scenes inspired by the work of Marguerite Gérard (1761–1837), the settings in chiselled and engraved gold, featuring foliage garlands and small flowers in coloured gold. The miniatures, one of which is signed ‘Mte Gérard’, reflect the intimate, family-oriented compositions characteristic of the French artist. Hallmarks are partially legible on the rim, beneath the lid and on the base.
