Description
Three-gold miniature case, probably from Hanau, late 18th century. Rectangular in shape with rounded corners, featuring a cage-style setting; the setting is in chiselled and amati rose gold, enhanced by a rich applied decoration in tricolour gold forming garlands of foliage, small flowers and rosebuds. The lid, the four sides and the underside are adorned with miniatures painted on ivory under glass, depicting courtly and village scenes in the Dutch style, after Henri-Joseph van Blarenberghe (1741–1826): peasant dances, rustic interiors, pastoral scenes and episodes from everyday life. The lid is signed Van Blarenberghe. Partially legible hallmarks on the rim, beneath the lid and on the base, with a rear-facing eagle’s head.
