Description
TIBETAN CONCH SHELL, 20th century.
A left-spiralled conch shell adorned with a repoussé silver-plated metal mount featuring a design of flowers and scrolls in a shell motif. The body is decorated with a mosaic centred on a Tibetan ‘om’ motif encircled by a border. It features two cabochon stones imitating turquoise and agate, one turquoise blue and the other red.
Also known as Dung-Dakar in Tibetan, this instrument embodies the sacred breath of the Buddha. Indeed, one of the defining characteristics of the Buddha’s form is his deep voice. Thus, the conch, with its deep sound, resonates like the Sacred Word.
It is mainly used for Buddhist meditation. During tantric liturgy, music and texts accompany the ceremony, and the conch forms part of the ensemble of instruments.
Length 15 cm x width 7 cm.
