Description
Karel de KESEL (1849–1922) Full-length portrait of Count Paul de Smet de Naeyer. A smaller version of the monumental sculpture erected in Wenduine (a municipality in West Flanders known as the ‘Princess of the Beaches’) in honour of Count Paul de Smet de Naeyer (1843–1913), an industrialist, banker, businessman and Belgian politician (Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister for around ten years, Minister of Finance or Minister of Public Works). Bronze cast, signed and dated 1911 on one side of the octagonal plinth, with the foundry mark ‘Cast by Verbeyst, Brussels’ H. 73.5 cm Signs of wear and slight loss of patina.
