The history of Puma represents one of the most fascinating chapters in Brazilian motoring. It all began in the mid-1960s under the impetus of Genaro ‘Rino’ Malzoni, an enthusiast keen to design a lightweight racing coupé based on the DKW-Vemag platform. Taking advantage of the closure of borders to imports – intended to boost the local industry – Malzoni became involved in the development of these sports cars.
When Volkswagen took over DKW, Puma seized the opportunity to reinvent its formula: the brand combined streamlined fibreglass bodywork — with lines inspired by the Italian design of the era, such as the Lamborghini Miura or the Ferrari Dino — with the Beetle’s tubular chassis and flat-four engine.
Combining the aesthetics of a supercar, feather-light weight and robust engineering, the brand established itself as an undisputed benchmark. Although it eventually ran out of steam in the 1980s, undermined by economic crises and the gradual opening up of the market, Puma remains an absolute legend amongst enthusiasts of unusual small GTs and masterful craftsmanship.
