Description
Chief's ceremonial cloak Ethiopia, 19th-20th century Silk, textile fibres and animal skin. The shape of the cloak is inspired by a lion skin, with long straps suggesting four legs and a tail. Approx. 90 x 60 cm; (35.43 x 23.62 in.). Museography : Minneapolis Institute of Art (inv. no. 2021.4.1). Incorporating explicit references to the lion, an animal traditionally associated with power, these capes could have been offered by the sovereign to deserving hunters or warriors as a mark of honour.
