Iran, Safavid period, XVIᵉ century
Black ink, gold and opaque pigments on paper, the text set in a rectangular cartouche with a gilt background finely illuminated with polychrome floral scrolls, framed by a cream inner margin threaded with blue, then wide blue-green margins decorated with floral motifs and birds traced in gold.
The composition features two couplets from Nizamî's "Makhzan al-Asrâr", calligraphed in "nastaliq" with an elegant, confident hand and balanced proportions.
The sheet is signed in the text: "faqîr malik" ("poor Malik").
Page 29 x 19.5 cm (11.4 x 7.7 in.); text 9.5 x 16.5 cm (3.7 x 6.5 in.).
Condition: surface wear and abrasions.
Malik Daylamî was one of the most celebrated masters of Persian calligraphy of the XVIᵉ century. Active during the reign of Shah tahmâsp (r.1524-1576), he was also in the service of Ibrâhîm Mîrzâ, nephew of the sovereign and governor of Mashhad, a great patron of the book arts. He was one of the calligraphers involved in the famous copy of Jâmî's "Haft Awrang" made for Ibrâhîm Mîrzâ, now in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington.
