Ⓛ Sheet of muraqqa' by Abd al-Rashîd Daylamî (d. 1081/1670-71 AD)
Iran, 17th century
Black ink, gold and gouache on paper, the text inscribed in a central cartouche with a gilded background richly illuminated with polychrome floral scrolls, framed by a dark green inner margin with "ebru" motifs, then wide margins decorated with gilded floral motifs.
The composition features two Persian couplets, calligraphed in nastaliq in a broad, confident hand.
The leaf is signed in the text: "mashaqahu 'abd al-rashîd" / "Abd al-Rashîd wrote it".

Condition: wear, slight abrasions.
Born in Iran, 'Abd al-Rashid Daylami was the nephew of Mir 'Emad Qazvini. After the latter's assassination, he emigrated to India and held a high position at the court of Shah Jahan, where he was tutor to the princes Darashukoh and Zib al-Nisa'. Appointed director of the royal library, he lived in Akbarabad during the reign of Aurangzeb (1658-1707) until his death in 1670-71 (Bayani, 1345/1966, Vol. II, p.397).
