Calligraphy in black ink in shikasta ta'liq script, arranged in four elegantly balanced lines. The Persian text, traced with a remarkable mastery of rhythm, is a eulogy addressed to a certain Sayyid Nur al-Din wa'l-Dunya wa'l-Milla Muhammad al-Hilli, probably a Shi'ite dignitary from Hilla in Iraq. It is framed by richly illuminated margins decorated with gilded foliage on a lavender-blue background. Signed and dated.

Muhammad Kazem Valeh al-Isfahani (d. AH 1229 / AD 1813-1814) was an Isfahani poet and calligrapher active at the turn of the Zand and Qajar eras, famous for his mastery of shikasta ta'liq (cf. Mahdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-i Khush-Navisan, vol. III, Tehran, 1348 sh., pp. 823-824).
