Persian cup (badiye) with the name of the Fourteen Most Pure
Safavid Iran, dated AH 1018 (AD 1609-1610 - reign of Shah Abbas I
Tin-plated copper. The lip bears an inscription in elegant Persian nasta'lîq, forming a prayer in the name of the Fourteen Most Pure. The chased decoration alternates spiral arabesques, cartouches, foliage and fleurons.

On the lip, in Persian nasta'liq, a prayer dedicated to the Fourteen Most Pure, followed by the date: sana 1018.
The spelling of the date is ambiguous: it could also read sana 1108 (AD 1696-1697). However, the first reading, AH 1018 / AD 1609-1610, is retained on the basis of the spelling and the style of the chased decoration, which is still based on Timurid ornamental grammar.
