The lip bears an inscription in elegant Persian nasta'lîq, forming a prayer in the name of the Fourteen Most Pure. The chased decoration alternates spiral arabesques, cartouches, foliage and fleurons. H. 19 x D. 35 cm (7.5 x 13.8 in.) Inscription: On the lip, in Persian nasta'liq, a prayer dedicated to the Fourteen Most Pure, followed by the date: sana 1018. The spelling of the date is ambiguous: it could also read sana 1108 (AD 1696-1697). However, the first reading, AH 1018 / AD 1609-1610, is retained on the basis of the spelling and the style of the chased decoration, which is still based on Timurid ornamental grammar. A Safavid tinned copper bowl (badiye) inscribed with a prayer to the Fourteen Pure Ones in elegant Persian nasta'liq, Iran, dated 1018 AH / 1609-1610 AD, in the reign of Shah 'Abbas I. The date can be read either as sana 1018 (1609-1610 AD) or as sana 1108 (1696-1697 AD); the rendering of the graphy and the timurid-derived style of the decoration support the earlier reading.
