Provenance :
Private collection, Paris.
The gol-o-bolbol motif, combining the rose and the nightingale, is one of the most emblematic themes of Persian art, both decorative and poetic. These compositions, very popular in albums (muraqqa'), reflect a growing interest in observing nature, sometimes nourished by European influences from the 18th century onwards.
A pair of Persian album paintings of gol-o-bolbol (rose and nightingale). Opaque pigments, each leaf showing a fully open rose flanked by buds in various stages of bloom, on which a finely rendered nightingale is perched; set within typical Persian album borders, old labels on the verso.
