Private collection, Paris.
The inscription 'yâ sâdiq al-wa'd' is traditionally associated with the artist Muhammad Sâdiq, a pupil of 'Alî Ashraf, who was active at the end of the 18th century. He is known for his large-format paintings and, in the art of lacquered objects, for his compositions of hunting, battles and extremely fine figurative scenes. This signature is attested on several works, including a qalamdân in the Khalili collection, dated AH 1193 (c. 1790), as well as on comparable published objects (N. D. Khalili, B. W. Robinson, T. Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic World, London, 1996, pp. 74-76). A mirror with similar decoration signed by this artist is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. 763-1888).
A signed and dated Zand period lacquered mirror, attributed to Muhammad Sadiq, polychrome and gold lacquered papier-mâché, signed " ya sadiq al-wa'd, sana 1192 ", Iran, Zand period, dated 1192 AH / 1778-1779 AD.
