Description
Mirror with nightingale, signed Yâ Bâqir al-'ulûm Iran, Zand art, dated AH 1205 (AD 1790-91) A rectangular lacquered papier-mâché mirror with a hinged lid that opens onto a mirror. The exterior is decorated in polychrome on a black background with a bird perched amid a spray of roses, in the classic gol-o-bolbol (rose and nightingale) style emblematic of Persian art. The borders are decorated with finely drawn foliage. The reverse of the lid features a delicate composition of an iris accompanied by a butterfly, while the back of the mirror is decorated in a similar way to the lid. Size 25.5 x 17.5 cm (10 x 6.9 in.) Inscription: Yâ Bâqir al-'ulûm, 1205. "O you who are well-versed in knowledge', 1790-1791. O you who are well-versed in learning, 1790-91. Provenance : Private collection, Paris. The formula Yâ Bâqir al-'ulûm refers to the painter Muhammad Bâqir, active in Iran at the end of the 18th century, a pupil of 'Alî Ashraf, mentioned among the major artists of his time (Karimzadeh Tabrizi, The Lives & Art of Old Painters of Iran, vol. 2, 1990, pp. 659-663). The present mirror is part of a well-identified corpus of lacquered papier-mâché objects dated between the 1740s and 1780s, several comparable signed and dated examples of which have come up for sale. However, the possible existence of two artists bearing the name Muhammad Bâqir, suggested by the chronological extent of the signed works, remains open (see Khalili et al, Lacquer of the Islamic World, The Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art, Part One, 1996, pp.75-76). A Zand period lacquered mirror with rose and nightingale, signed Ya Baqir al-'ulum, 1205 - a formula referring to the painter Muhammad Baqir, pupil of 'Ali Ashraf and one of the great masters of Persian floral lacquer, Iran, Zand period, dated 1205 AH / 1790-1791 AD.
