Description
Lacquered mirror signed Nurullah Hamadani
Iran, early Qajar period, dated AH 1208 (AD 1793-1794)
A rectangular lacquered wooden mirror with a hinged lid revealing a mirror. The decoration, painted in polychrome on a brown-red background, consists of several figurative scenes. The front illustrates an episode from the Joseph and Zulaykha cycle, in which Zulaykha is surrounded by young women while Joseph, an idealised figure, stands - the composition refers to the famous episode in which the women, dazzled by his beauty, injure themselves while cutting the fruit. On the reverse, an episode from the story of Sheikh San'an and the young Christian woman, a theme from Persian mystical literature (the Mantiq al-Tayr by 'Attar), evoking the power of love and the renunciation of convention.
Under the composition, signed and dated in black lettering:
raqam-i Nurullah musavvir-i Hamadani 1208
Size: 27.5 × 18.5 cm (10.8 × 7.3 in.)
Provenance
Private collection, Paris.
Nurullah is mentioned by Karimzadeh Tabrizi as a painter of mirror boxes from Hamadan, active in that province in the early Hegira 13th century (late 18th century). The present mirror, signed and dated AH 1208 (AD 1793-1794), unlike contemporary Qajar mirrors, which are generally made from cardboard
covered in lacquered paper, this one is executed on a finely worked solid wooden board
technical feature that makes it even rarer.
A lacquered wood mirror depicting an episode from the Joseph and Zulaykha and Shaykh San'an and the Christian maiden, signed and dated by Nurullah Hamadani, 1208 AH (1793-1794 AD), Iran, early Qajar period. Nurullah is recorded by Karimzadeh Tabrizi as a painter of mirror cases active in Hamadan in the late 18th century AD.
