Iran, Qajar art, 19th century
An elongated lacquered papier-mâché pen box with rounded ends, decorated in polychrome with gold highlights on a black background. The lid is decorated with a central medallion showing a young woman holding a fan, surrounded by floral bouquets and gilded foliage. The sides feature landscape medallions and floral motifs in the same spirit.
