Ⓛ Illuminated Shi'ite prayer book: al-Jawshan al-Kabîr. Qajar Iran, copied by Aghâ Sayyid 'Alî, dated AH 1282. (AD 1865) Arabic manuscript on paper, accompanied by a partial Persian interlinear translation; 224 leaves, with nine lines of naskh in black ink inscribed in clouds of gold and punctuated by passages in gold thuluth; the following sections are copied in seven lines of naskh in black ink, lined with an interlinear Persian translation in red ink. The titles, in gilt thuluth, are set in rectangular polychrome cartouches with geometric and floral decoration; double framing with blue, red and gold fillets. The richly illuminated opening bifolio features a large, finely painted frontispiece (sarlowh) and polychrome floral borders enhanced with gold. Colophon signed and dated: "kataba-hu Aghâ Sayyid 'Alî, sanat 1282" ("written by Aghâ Sayyid 'Alî, hegira 1282 / AD 1865"). Qajar binding in polychrome lacquer with floral decoration, back covers also lacquered. H. 19 x W. 12 cm (7.5 x 4.7 in.) The Jawshan Kabir (literally "Great Armour") is a long Islamic prayer containing 1001 divine names and attributes. When recited, it has a protective and expiatory function - hence the name "Great Cuirass", an image of the spiritual armour worn by the speaker.
