Description
Illuminated Shi'ite prayer book, copied by Muhammad Baqir al-Tahrani Qajar Iran, dated AH 1244 (AD 1828-1829) Collection of Qur'anic verses and prayers, manuscript in Arabic and Persian on paper; 100 leaves calligraphed in elegant naskh with 11 lines per page; the opening bifolio is entirely illuminated with rich polychrome decoration enhanced with gold; the volume opens with the sura Ya-Sin (s. 36). Colophon signed and dated. Bound in lacquer finely decorated with floral scrolls and delicate foliage. Size: 19 x 12.5 cm (7.5 x 4.9 in.) Provenance : Private collection, Paris. A dedication in Persian at the end of the volume states that the manuscript was executed "at the request and insistence of His Excellency Hajj 'Abd al-Karim Tabrizi". The colophon is signed by the calligrapher Muhammad Baqir al-Tahrani and dated AH 1244. (1828-1829 D.C.). Later inscriptions Several manuscript notes record family births in AH 1272, 1278 and 1279 (AD 1855-63), indicating that the manuscript was passed on as part of a family chronicle. A Qajar illuminated Shi'i prayer book with a Persian dedication at the end of the volume records that the manuscript was made "at the request and insistence of His Excellency Hajj 'Abd al-Karim Tabrizi". Colophon signed by the calligrapher Muhammad Baqir al-Tahrani, Iran, dated 1244 AH / 1828-1829 AD.
