Description
Calligraphic and talismanic scroll signed Mohammad Baqer Qajar Iran, dated AH 1282 (AD 1865-1866) Manuscript in ink and polychrome pigments on paper heightened with gold, mounted in a scroll. The text unfolds in successive registers in elegant thuluth script, punctuated by calligraphic panels framed in blue and gold fillets. The frontispiece and several sections are richly illuminated with floral scrolls and geometric motifs on gold and lapis backgrounds. In the centre is a compartmentalised circular diagram with a talismanic function, framed at the four corners by the last four suras of the Qur'an known as the "Four Quls" (suras 109, 112, 113 and 114). Colophon: katabahu Mohammad Baqer 1282 ('Mohammad Baqer wrote it, AH 1282 / AD 1865-66'). 136 × 10 cm (53.5 × 3.9 in.) Provenance Private collection, Paris. A Qajar illuminated devotional and talismanic scroll signed by Muhammad Baqir, dated 1282 AH (1865-1866 AD). The scroll belongs to the Qajar tradition of portable devotional manuscripts combining religious and protective functions; the compartmented central diagram is characteristic of the talismanic devices widely circulated in nineteenth-century Iran.
