Description
Ⓛ Firman of Nasser al-din Shah Qajar addressed to the Ottoman Grand Vizier Kamil Pasha.
Iran, dated AH Safar 1306. (AD October 1888)
Chancery document written in black ink in regular Persian nastaliq on large paper, folded; at the top of the document is the imperial seal of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar in black, surmounted by a golden invocation in thuluth; a second stamp appears on the reverse and at the bottom of the document, bearing the date 1306.
Condition: paper creased at the folds; slight tears.

Former private collection, Oxford, acquired between 1960 and 1980, then passed on by descent.
This imperial decree issued by Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar (r. 1848-1896) is addressed to the Ottoman Grand Vizier Mehmed Kamil Pasha (Kamil Basha Sadr Azam). Set against the backdrop of Iranian-Ottoman diplomacy in the late 19th century, marked by recurrent border negotiations, it bears witness to the attempts at rapprochement between the two great Muslim powers in the region in the face of growing European pressure.
