Ikat silk coat Bukhara, Uzbekistan, early 20th century Ikat silk woven into a long dress with straight sleeves and a V-neck; the lining is printed cotton. Size: 128 x 128 cm (50.4 x 50.4 in.) From the 19th century onwards, Bukhara established itself as one of the major centres for the production of ikats in Central Asia. The city's Jewish community played a decisive role: belonging to the merchant and urban class of Uzbek society, Jewish craftsmen were mainly involved in dyeing, weaving and trading in finished products.
