Bukhara, Uzbekistan, early 20th century

From the 19th century onwards, Bukhara established itself as one of the major centres for the production of ikats in Central Asia. The city's Jewish community played a decisive role: belonging to the merchant and urban class of Uzbek society, Jewish craftsmen were mainly involved in dyeing, weaving and trading in finished products. The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme (mahJ) in Paris has several of these famous coats in its collections.
