Description
Sipar - Ceremonial shield with solar face and Persian inscriptions
Iran, Qajar period, 2nd half of the 19th century
Gold damascened steel (koftgari), decorated with five bosses (umbos) in the shape of a khorshîd-khânom, a radiant solar motif with an anthropomorphic face, and winged figures against a background of finely chased foliage. A frieze of calligraphic cartouches in nasta'lîq bears inscriptions in Persian. The reverse has a leather handle for gripping.

Collection of Raoul Brandon (1878-1941), politician, state architect and teacher at the Beaux-Arts, who practised notably in Egypt; by descent to his son; given to the present owner for his wedding in 1958; private collection, France.
A Qajar steel parade shield (sipar), damascened in gold (koftgari), embossed with five sun-face, within nasta'lîq cartouche bands of Persian inscriptions, Iran, Qajar period, 19th century.
