Description
Ⓛ Decorative astrolabe in the medieval Maghreb taste.
Maghreb, late 19th - early 20th century
Silver-plated brass planispherical astrolabe, mounted with its throne (kursî) with poly-lobed cut-out and suspension ring. The throne is decorated with a dense interlacing of plant arabesques and calligraphic cartouches. The instrument is complete with all its parts: the mother (umm), the spider ('ankabût / rete) decorated with floral motifs, six simple spandrels, the alidade and its pivot. The inscriptions accompany the schematic celestial and geographical divisions on the spandrels and the star indicators on the rete; their function is ornamental and does not involve any exact astronomical correspondence.
H. 30 cm (11.8 in.)
A decorative planispheric silvered brass astrolabe, Morocco, late 19th - early 20th century (11.8 in.).
Though non-operational, the astrolabe faithfully evokes the silhouette and decorative refinement of the great medieval astrolabes produced in the workshops of Toledo, Cordoba and Fez.
