Iznik tile with tulips
Ottoman Empire, Turkey, Iznik, circa 1560-1580
Siliceous-paste ceramic, decorated in polychrome under a transparent lead glaze, in cobalt blue, turquoise and bright red on a white slip background. The composition features a profuse bouquet of tapering tulips with red-brown petals speckled with white - alternating with ragged carnations, small flowers with red hearts and a stylised pomegranate flower; slender curved stems and turquoise lanceolate leaves enliven the entire surface.
Condition: fine glaze, slight wear.
Size: 19 x 20 cm (7.5 x 7.9 in.); wooden frame
Provenance :
Former collection of Gaston Privat de Fressenel (1881-1924), senior French official in Egypt and renowned collector, based at the Villa Privat-Gezireh in Cairo, then by descent; collection repatriated to France in 1924.
