Description
Sura al-An'âm VI - The cattle Ottoman Empire, Turkey, first half of the 16th century Arabic manuscript on paper, 32 leaves, in beautiful naskh script in black ink on seven lines per page, gilt verse separations, framed in gilt and blue fillets, opening with a fine frontispiece finely illuminated in polychrome with stylised floral decoration. Bound in brown morocco with stamped decoration enlivened by fine floral scrolls. Size: 20 x 14.5 cm (7.9 x 5.7 in.) Provenance : Former private French collection, from an ancestor who taught in Egypt in the 1920s (mainly in Cairo). This Qur'anic manuscript is part of early Ottoman production, at a pivotal period in the history of calligraphy. The clear, regular naskh script still bears witness to a state prior to the complete standardisation of styles under the influence of Sheikh Hamdullah (d. 1520), to whom tradition attributes the refinement and codification of the six canonical scripts. The hand here, well mastered, retains a certain flexibility, perceptible in particular in the spacing and rhythm of the line. The balance of the page layout, combined with the quality of the illumination - particularly the frontispiece and the finely executed frames - places this manuscript in the production of a high-level workshop. An Ottoman manuscript of Surat al-An'am (Q. 6, "The Cattle"). Arabic manuscript on paper, 32 leaves, opening with a finely illuminated polychrome frontispiece , Ottoman Empire, Turkey, first half of the 16th century. The script, clear and regular, retains a certain suppleness perceptible in the spacing and rhythm of the line - characteristic of an Ottoman hand prior to the full normalisation of the canonical scripts under the influence of Sheikh Hamdullah (d. 1520); the balanced layout and the quality of the illumination place this manuscript in a high-level Ottoman workshop production.
