This Qur'anic copy dates from the golden age of Ottoman calligraphy, during the reign of Mehmed IV (r. 1648-1687). Under his reign, the great viziers of the Köprülü dynasty developed a remarkable patronage of the arts, illustrated by the founding in Istanbul in 1678 of the Köprülü Library, the first public waqf public library in the Ottoman Empire. The dating of this volume places it in the final apogee phase of seventeenth-century Ottoman calligraphic production. The copyist Musa ibn Ahmad Efendi belongs to this great tradition: he trained with Mustafa Efendi, known as Suyolcuzade (d. AH 1097 / 1686), one of the main calligraphers contemporary with Hafiz Osman (d. AH 1110 / 1698), the absolute master of the Ottoman naskh, whose canonical script was to set the standard for imperial Qur'anic copying for almost two centuries. (cf. Mustakim-zade Suleyman Sadeddin Efendi, Tuhfa-i Hattatin, Istanbul, 1928, p. 562). An Ottoman illuminated Qur'an copied by Musa ibn Ahmad Efendi, known as Farruh-zade, Ottoman Empire, Turkey, dated 1094 AH / 1682-1683 AD. The copyist of the present manuscript, Musa ibn Ahmad Efendi, belongs to this great tradition: he was trained under Mustafa Efendi, known as Suyolcuzade (d. 1097 AH / 1686), one of the principal contemporary calligraphers with Hafiz Osman (d. 1110 / 1698) - the supreme master of Ottoman naskh, whose canonical script would set for nearly two centuries the model for imperial Qur'an copying Mustakim-zade Suleyman Sadeddin Efendi, Tuhfa-i Hattatin, Istanbul, 1928, p. 562).
