This pedestal table is part of the Levantine production of inlaid furniture, attributable to the workshops of Jerusalem in the 18th century, a period during which refined craftsmanship based on mother-of-pearl work developed. The quality of the workmanship, in particular the floral friezes tinted on the mother-of-pearl feet, distinguishes it from the more standardised production of the 19th century and testifies to the early, particularly meticulous state of this craft.
A Jerusalem mother-of-pearl inlaid octagonal wood occasional table, Ottoman Empire, Palestine, 18th century.
