Ottoman writing case
Algeria, early 19th century
Wood with inlaid mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell and bone decoration on all sides. The front is organised around a flap revealing eight drawers whose fronts repeat the same geometric repertoire - a network of star-shaped hexagons, friezes of triangles, medallions with four lobes cut out in mother-of-pearl on a tortoiseshell background. The opening lid reveals an original mirror framed with openwork scrolls in mother-of-pearl and bone on a red lacquered background. The original locks have been preserved. Restoration.
